CCA (Cold Cranking Amps)
What Is CCA?
CCA measures the current (in amperes) a fully charged 12V battery can deliver at -18degC (0degF) for 30 seconds while maintaining voltage above 7.2V (1.2V per cell). CCA is the single most important specification for cold-climate starting performance — and the most commonly compared (and misunderstood) battery rating.
Test Method (SAE J537)
- Battery is fully charged and placed in a cold chamber at -18degC +/- 1degC for 24 hours
- A constant-current discharge at the battery's rated CCA value is applied
- Voltage is recorded at 10 seconds and 30 seconds
- Pass: Voltage remains >7.2V at 30 seconds AND the battery can sustain the discharge for the full duration
- The test is destructive at the limit — repeated CCA testing reduces battery life
Why Different Standards Give Different Numbers
| CCA Standard | Test Temp | Duration | Compared to SAE |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAE J537 (North America) | -18degC | 30 sec | Reference (1.0x) |
| EN 50342-1 (Europe) | -18degC | 10 sec + 30 sec | ~1.10-1.15x SAE |
| DIN 43539 (Germany) | -18degC | 30 sec | ~0.90x SAE |
| JIS D 5301 (Japan) | -15degC | Varies | ~0.70-0.85x SAE |
| IEC 60095-1 (International) | -18degC | 30 sec | ~1.0x SAE |
| GB/T 5008 (China) | -18degC | 30 sec | ~1.0x SAE |
A battery rated 500 CCA (SAE) may be labeled as 550 EN, 450 DIN, or 400 JIS. Always verify which CCA standard is referenced on the label.
What CCA Do You Need?
| Engine Type | Typical CCA Requirement |
|---|---|
| 4-cylinder gasoline (1.3-2.0L) | 370-500 |
| V6 gasoline (2.5-3.5L) | 500-650 |
| V8 gasoline (>4.0L) | 650-850 |
| 4-cylinder diesel (2.0-3.0L) | 550-750 |
| V6/V8 diesel (>3.0L) | 750-1,100 |
| Heavy truck diesel (>8.0L) | 900-1,200+ |
Climate adjustment: Add 20% for cold climates (-20degC or below). Subtract 10% for consistently warm climates (never below 0degC).
