An AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery is a valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery where the electrolyte is absorbed in a fiberglass mat separator, immobilizing the acid and enabling sealed, spill-proof operation with high cycle life.
2. How It Works
In an AGM battery, the sulfuric acid electrolyte is fully absorbed into a highly porous borosilicate glass mat compressed between the plates. This 'starved electrolyte' design allows oxygen recombination: oxygen generated at the positive plate during charging travels through the glass mat to the negative plate, where it recombines to form water. This eliminates water loss and enables sealed operation.
3. Construction
AGM batteries use compressed cell stacks with tighter plate spacing than flooded batteries. The glass mat separator is compressed to ~20% of its free volume. A pressure relief valve maintains internal pressure at 1-4 psi. Plates use high-purity lead with calcium-tin alloy grids.
